Bioaccumulation of mercury, cadmium, zinc, chromium, and lead in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of a large commercially valuable catfish species from Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arantes,Fábio P.; Savassi,Lourenço A.; Santos,Hélio B.; Gomes,Marcos V.T.; Bazzoli,Nilo.
The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle...

Comparative analysis of the reproductive activity of Leporinus piau (Characiformes: Anostomidae) in lentic and lotic environments Neotropical Ichthyology
Nascimento,Aline Virtude do; Marcon,Lucas; Santos,José Enemir dos; Santiago,Kleber Biana; Rizzo,Elizete; Bazzoli,Nilo.
Abstract In this study, we determined the main reproductive parameters of piau gordura, Leporinus piau, in two sections of the São Francisco River basin. Between May 2015 and April 2016, a total of 573 specimens were captured from a lentic environment (section 1), the Três Marias Reservoir (TMR), and a lotic environment (section 2), downstream of the TMR at the confluence of the São Francisco River (SFR) with the Abaeté River. Analysis of reproductive activity showed that L. piau from both sections reproduced, but females and males from section 1 exhibited higher total length, body weight, Fulton condition factor, and gonadosomatic index values, as compared to section 2. Sexual dimorphism was evident in the species, with females being larger than males....

Embriogenesis and larval ontogeny of the "piau-gordura", Leporinus piau (Fowler) (Pisces, Anostomidae) after induced spawning Zoologia
Borçato,Fábio Luiz; Bazzoli,Nilo; Sato,Yoshimi.
Mature males and females of Leporinus piau (Fowler, 1941) were induced to reproduce through a hypophysation process. Extrusion occurred 12 h or 312 hours-degree after the hypophysation, at a water temperature of 26°C. Fertilized eggs were maintained in incubators at 24°C. Embryonic development, was evaluated using every 10 minutes, fresh egg samples which were analyzed under stereoscopic microscope. The larvae were collected at 24-hour intervals for seven days after hatching, fixed in Bouin's fluid and were submitted to routine histological techniques. The eggs of L. piau were slightly gray, non-adhesive and round-shaped. After 1.5 h the embryo was at the 64-blastomere phase and showed a wide yolk region on the vegetative pole. Within 6.25 h, blastopore...

Growth hormone on ovarian morphology of lambaris (Astyanax bimaculatus) after induced spawning Ciência Rural
Marcon,Lucas; Freitas,Vivian Rocha; Bazzoli,Nilo; Rizzo,Elizete; Benjamin,Laércio dos Anjos.
ABSTRACT: Lambari, Astyanax bimaculatus, is an oviparous, multiple-spawning fish that is reproductively active throughout the year, which makes it promising for cultivation and research. This research histologically evaluates the ovaries of lambari that have undergone artificial spawning induced with pituitary extract (control group), and the effect of growth hormone at a dose of 2 mg/g body weight (treatment group) on the subsequent process of ovarian recovery. Ovaries of fish in both the control and treatments groups were collected at 120 hours after spawning and analyzed using optical microscopy to characterize the average quantities of: follicles in different stages of development, post-ovulatory follicles, follicular atresia and granulocytes....

Oocyte surface in four teleost fish species postspawning and fertilization BABT
Rizzo,Elizete; Moura,Thais F.C.; Sato,Yoshimi; Bazzoli,Nilo.
Cytological and cytochemical studies were carried out to investigate the surface characteristics of oocytes of four teleost species from the São Francisco river. The fishes were submitted to hypophysation at the Três Marias Hybrobiology and Fishculture Station, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in January 1996. Postspawning, oocytes of the curimatãs Prochilodus affinis, Prochilodus marggravii and dourado Salminus brasiliensis were surrounded by a thick, three-layered zona pellucida with radial striae. The surface of spawned oocytes of the surubim, Pseudoplatystoma coruscans, was comprised of mucous coat located externally to a thin, two-layered and striated zona pellucida. Oocyte activation during fertilization, lead to cortical reaction, formation of a perivitelline...

Reproductive biology of Moenkhausia intermedia (Eigenmann) (Pisces, Characiformes) in Itumbiara Reservoir, Goiás, Brazil Zoologia
Hojo,Renê Eiji Souza; Santos,Gilmar Bastos; Bazzoli,Nilo.
To study the reproductive biology of Moenkhausia intermedia (Eigenmann, 1908) in Itumbiara reservoir, Paranaíba river, Goiás, Brazil, a total of 301 specimens (237 females and 64 males) were captured quaterly from January to December 1993. The gonadosomatic index of females and males were related to morphologic variations of the gonads in different reproductive cycle stages (RCS). Analysis of RCS frequency and variations in the gonadosomatic index showed that M. intermedia reproduces during the whole year with fractional spawning. The smallest standard length at advanced maturity stage was estimated as 6.6 cm for females and 6.0 cm for males. The stomach repletion and coelomic fat indexes of both sexes reached peak values in the rest stage, suggesting that...

Reproductive biology of Steindachnerina insculpta (Fernandez-Yépez) (Teleostei, Curimatidae) in Furnas reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil Zoologia
Ribeiro,Vinicius M. A.; Santos,Gilmar B.; Bazzoli,Nilo.
The 'saguiru' Steindachnerina insculpta, a small teleost detritivorous fish species in Furnas reservoir, upper rio Paraná basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil, has a prolonged period of reproductive activity that extends from September to March, with fractionated spawning. During gonadal maturation, the females showed a low hepatosomatic index, suggesting that hepatic substances are possibly transferred from liver to ovaries. During the reproductive period, this fish had lower stomach repletion and coelomic fat indexes, indicating that the species eat less and consume more fat reserves. The weight of the ovaries influenced positively the condition factor (K1), since the lowest K2 values (without the gonads weight), were obtained during maturation, confirming the...

Reproductive biology of the peacock bass Cichla piquiti (Perciformes: Cichlidae), an exotic species in a Neotropical reservoir Neotropical Ichthyology
Vieira,Augusto B. C.; Salvador-Jr.,Luiz F.; Melo,Rafael M. C.; Santos,Gilmar B.; Bazzoli,Nilo.
To analyze the reproductive biology of the peacock bass Cichla piquiti, 361 specimens were collected bimonthly in the Itumbiara Reservoir, southeast Brazil, from December 2004 to November 2005. Males and females in reproductive activity occurred during almost the entire year, with reproductive peak occurring before the beginning of the rains when the water temperature remained low, indicating that these environmental variables do not directly influence in the reproduction of C. piquiti. The long reproductive period, partially spent ovaries contained postovulatory follicles and oocytes in all developmental stages, indicate asynchronous development of oocytes and multiple spawning. The mean total lengthand body weigth were, respectively, 38.2 ± 7 cm and...

Reproductive plasticity of Hypostomus affinis (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) as a mechanism to adapt to a reservoir with poor habitat complexity Rev. Bras. Zool.
Duarte,Silvana; Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Bazzoli,Nilo.
In this work we describe the gonad morphology and spawning season of Hypostomus affinis (Steindachner, 1877) in a tropical reservoir based on 55 males and 125 females. Our aim was to assess eventual adaptations in reproductive tactics developed by this riverine species inhabiting an oligotrophic reservoir with low habitat complexity, few rocks and few other preferred consolidated substrata. We described the stages of cells of reproductive lineage, gonadal development and some reproductive traits which were compared with information in the available literature. Cells from the spermatogenic lineage were spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa, and cells from the oocytarian lineage were primary oocytes, previtelogenic oocytes, cortical...
